Faux wood blinds

The look of painted wood, built for steam, salt air and real life.

What is a faux wood blind?

A faux wood blind is a horizontal blind with slats made from PVC or a wood-polymer composite, finished to look like painted or stained wood. Faux wood resists moisture, warping and fading, which makes it the practical choice for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements and humid coastal homes.

The workhorse of Atlantic homes

If you walk through enough houses in this region you learn something about moisture. It is in the bathroom after a shower, in the kitchen over the kettle, in the basement every spring, and in the cottage on the Northumberland Strait that sits closed up from October to May.

Real wood does not love any of that. Faux wood does not care. It will not warp, it will not crack, and it wipes clean. In a crisp white it looks almost identical to painted wood from across the room, which is why it is the blind we fit most in kitchens and bathrooms, and in family homes where kids and pets treat window coverings as optional.

Options

  • Slat width: 5 cm (2") standard, 6.3 cm (2.5") for a plantation look on larger windows
  • Finish: smooth whites and off-whites (most popular), embossed wood-grain stains, greys
  • Cloth tapes: for a softer look and less light through the cord holes
  • Route-less slats: better privacy and darkness
  • Operation: cordless lift with wand tilt (our standard); motorized tilt

Where faux wood blinds work best

  • Bathrooms and ensuites
  • Kitchens, especially over the sink
  • Laundry rooms and mudrooms
  • Basements
  • Cottages and seasonal homes
  • Kids' rooms and high-traffic family rooms
  • Rental units (durable and easy to replace)

The honest trade-offs

  • Faux wood is heavier than real wood. On very wide windows (over about 1.8 m) we split it into two blinds so it stays easy to lift.
  • Up close, stained faux wood does not have the depth of real grain. In white, it is very hard to tell.
  • Like any slatted blind, it lets a little light through when closed. Not for blackout.

Frequently asked questions

Are faux wood blinds good for bathrooms?

Yes. Faux wood blinds are one of the best choices for bathrooms because they do not absorb moisture, warp or crack in humidity, and they wipe clean easily. They are also a good choice for kitchens, laundry rooms and basements.

Do faux wood blinds look cheap?

Not when they are made well and fitted properly. A quality faux wood blind in white or off-white looks very close to painted wood. Custom sizing, a matching valance and cloth tapes all help them look finished.

What is the difference between faux wood and real wood blinds?

Faux wood blinds are made from PVC or composite and resist moisture; real wood blinds are made from hardwood and are lighter and warmer-looking. Faux wood is better in humid rooms; real wood is better on wide windows and in heritage living spaces.

Are faux wood blinds good for coastal homes?

Yes. Faux wood holds up well to humidity and salt air, and will not warp in a damp cottage that is closed up for the winter. Pair it with corrosion-resistant hardware in waterfront homes.

How much do faux wood blinds cost?

Custom faux wood blinds typically cost about $200 to $500 per window installed, depending on size and options. They are one of the best-value custom products we make.

How do I clean faux wood blinds?

Dust them with a microfibre cloth, or wipe them with a damp cloth and a little mild soap. Unlike real wood, faux wood can be wiped down with water.
