Are motorized blinds worth it?

Short answer: Motorized blinds are worth it for windows you cannot easily reach, for homes with young children, for large or numerous windows, and for anyone who wants shades to open and close on a schedule. They typically cost $200 to $500 more per window than a manual blind. Most homes get the best value by motorizing only the windows that matter most.

Key takeaways

  • Expect about $450 to $1,200 per motorized window installed in Canada.
  • Rechargeable battery motors need no electrician and last months per charge.
  • Schedules turn insulating shades into an everyday energy saver.
  • Motorize the hard windows first; leave easy ones manual.
  • Cold windows drain batteries faster; solar panels or hardwiring solve it.

What "motorized" actually means

A motorized blind has a small, quiet motor inside the roller tube or headrail. Instead of pulling a cord or lifting the bottom rail, you press a button on a remote or wall switch, tap your phone, say a voice command, or let a schedule do it.

Almost any shade can be motorized: roller, solar, cellular, zebra, sheer and Roman shades, and the tilt on wood and faux wood blinds.

What they cost

Item Typical cost
Motorized blind, installed About $450 to $1,200 per window
Added cost vs. the same manual blind About $200 to $500 per window
Smart hub or bridge (for app and voice) About $100 to $300, one time, runs the whole house
Wall switch or extra remote Usually under $100 each
Solar charging panel Usually under $100 per shade

Ranges reflect published Canadian pricing. One Canadian price guide shows a mid-sized zebra blind going from about $242 corded to $435 motorized and $727 with full smart-home integration.

The real reasons people motorize

1. The window you cannot reach

The tall living room window over the stairs. The kitchen window behind the sink. The skylight. The bank of windows behind a sectional. If reaching it means a ladder, a pole or leaning over furniture, you will stop adjusting it. A motor fixes that permanently.

2. Schedules that save energy

An insulating cellular shade only saves energy when it is closed. On a winter evening in Atlantic Canada, the sun sets around 4:15 to 4:45 p.m. A schedule that closes shades at sunset and opens south-facing ones on sunny winter mornings captures the savings every single day, whether you remember or not.

3. Safety

No cords, no chains, nothing for a child or pet to reach. Health Canada's corded window covering rules limit reachable cords to 22 cm. Motorized shades sidestep the issue entirely.

4. Sleep

Bedroom blackout shades that open slowly at 7 a.m. are a gentler wake-up than an alarm. In June, when the sun is up before 5:30 a.m. across most of the region, they also stay shut until you want them open.

5. Looking lived-in

Shades moving on a schedule make a house look occupied when you are at the cottage or away for the winter.

Battery or hardwired?

Rechargeable battery motors are what we fit in most homes. The battery lives inside the shade and typically lasts several months between charges with normal daily use. You recharge it with a USB cable, or add a small solar panel that keeps it topped up. No wiring, no wall repairs, installed in minutes.

Hardwired motors run on low-voltage power and never need charging. They are ideal for new builds and major renovations, where an electrician can run wire before the drywall goes up. If you are building, plan for them.

A note on cold. Lithium batteries lose capacity in the cold. On a frosty north window in Corner Brook, Fredericton or Labrador City, expect to charge more often. A solar panel or hardwired motor avoids the issue.

Smart-home compatibility

Most motorized shades today work with the major platforms through a small hub or bridge:

  • Google Home: voice control through Nest speakers and displays, routines
  • Amazon Alexa: voice control and routines
  • Apple HomeKit: Siri, the Home app, automations
  • Professional systems: Control4, Crestron and similar, on request

Check two things before you buy: which hub the motors need, and whether it supports the platform you already use. Read: smart blinds for Google, Alexa and HomeKit.

When motorized blinds are not worth it

  • Easy-to-reach windows you adjust once a day. A cordless manual shade does the job for less.
  • Tiny windows. Bathroom windows and narrow sidelights often do not justify a motor.
  • If you will never use the schedules or app. A remote is still nice, but most of the value comes from automation and hard-to-reach windows.

A smart way to start

Motorize in this order:

  1. Windows you physically cannot reach.
  2. Large windows and patio doors where shades are heavy.
  3. Bedrooms (for wake-up schedules and darkness).
  4. Main living areas facing south or west (for glare and heat schedules).

Everything else can stay manual, and you can add more later.

How we approach this at Atlantic Shades

We fit the motor in our Halifax workshop, pair and test it on the bench, then install it, set the upper and lower limits, connect it to your app and voice assistant, and set up your first schedules with you before we leave. Most people start with two or three motorized shades and add more once they see how much they use them.

Frequently asked questions

How much do motorized blinds cost in Canada?

Motorized blinds typically cost about $450 to $1,200 per window installed, roughly $200 to $500 more than the same blind with a manual lift. A hub for app and voice control costs about $100 to $300 once.

How long do motorized blind batteries last?

With normal use of once or twice a day, a rechargeable motor battery typically lasts several months between charges. Heavy shades and very cold windows use battery faster. A solar panel keeps the battery charged automatically.

Do motorized blinds need Wi-Fi?

The remote and wall switch work without Wi-Fi. App control, voice control and remote schedules usually need a hub connected to your home Wi-Fi.

Can I motorize my existing blinds?

Usually not well. Motors need to be built into the shade. Retrofit kits exist for some products, but results are mixed. New motorized shades on your most important windows is usually the better investment.

Do motorized blinds work in a power outage?

Battery motors keep working because they do not use household power. Voice and app control may stop until the internet returns, but remotes and wall switches still work.

Are motorized blinds noisy?

Modern motors make a soft hum for a few seconds. Quieter motors are available for bedrooms.
