The best blinds for sliding patio doors

Short answer: For a patio door you use often, choose a covering that slides sideways: vertical blinds for value, vertical cellular shades for warmth, or panel track shades for a modern look. If you mostly look through the door, two or three roller or cellular shades side by side give the cleanest result. Motorize very large doors.

Key takeaways

  • Start with how often you walk through the door.
  • Vertical cellular is the warmest sideways-opening option.
  • Plan for handle clearance and stack space.
  • Side-by-side shades look cleanest but must be raised to use the door.
  • Big doors mean heavy shades, which makes motorization worth considering.

Why patio doors are tricky

In many Atlantic homes, the patio door is the single largest piece of glass in the house. It faces the deck, the backyard, the lake or the water. It lets in the most light, loses the most heat and takes the most traffic. A covering that is wrong for how you use it will drive you mad within a month.

Step 1: How do you use the door?

  • Ten times a day (dog, kids, barbecue): you need something that slides to the side without lifting.
  • A few times a week: a shade that lifts is fine.
  • Mostly a window: choose purely on looks and light.

Step 2: Compare the options

Vertical blinds

Vanes hang from a track and slide to one side or split in the middle. Rotate them to let light in without opening.

  • Good: practical, affordable, easy to walk through, wand control is child-safe.
  • Less good: insulate little; older styles can clatter. Modern fabric vanes are much quieter.
  • Vertical blinds

Vertical cellular shades

Insulating honeycomb fabric turned on its side, gliding along a track.

  • Good: by far the warmest sideways option, soft and quiet, modern.
  • Less good: costs more; no rotating vanes, so you open it to let light in.

Panel track shades

Wide fabric panels that slide past each other on a multi-channel track.

  • Good: clean, architectural look; great on very wide doors and window walls; works with solar fabrics.
  • Less good: panels stack and take up space at the side; little insulation.

Side-by-side roller or cellular shades

Two or three shades, each covering one section of the door.

  • Good: the cleanest look; matches other windows; blackout and solar options; cellular insulates well.
  • Less good: you have to raise at least one to use the door. Best if motorized or if the door is rarely used.

Details that make or break it

Handle clearance. Sliding door handles stick out several centimetres. Your covering has to clear them, which is about bracket projection and mount position.

Stack space. Verticals and panel tracks stack at the side when open. If there is wall beside the door, extend the track so the stack sits on the wall, not in front of the glass.

Which way it stacks. Stack toward the fixed panel side, so the opening side is clear.

Glare and heat. West-facing doors get strong evening sun, especially in June when the sun sets after 9 p.m. across most of the region. Solar fabric in a vertical or panel track keeps the yard in view and cuts the glare.

Cold. If the room by the door is cold in winter, vertical cellular or cellular shades make the biggest difference.

How we approach this at Atlantic Shades

We measure the opening, the handle projection and the wall space beside the door, and ask how you use it before recommending anything. Every covering is made to measure in our Halifax workshop.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best blind for a sliding patio door?

Vertical blinds or vertical cellular shades are best for doors you use often, because they slide sideways. Vertical cellular is much warmer. For doors you rarely use, side-by-side roller or cellular shades look cleanest.

Are vertical blinds out of style?

Modern vertical blinds with fabric vanes and quiet tracks remain a practical, popular choice. If you prefer a different look, vertical cellular and panel track shades do the same job.

What is the warmest covering for a patio door?

A vertical cellular shade, or side-by-side cellular shades if you rarely use the door. Both trap insulating air against the glass.

Should patio door blinds stack left, right or split?

Stack toward the fixed panel, so the side you walk through stays clear. Split stacks suit doors that open in the middle.

How much do patio door blinds cost?

Custom patio door coverings typically cost about $400 to $1,500 installed, depending on product and width.
